I'm walking over to RedBox to pick-up Midnight in Paris.

It's after 4 in the afternoon.

The light is perfect.

The palm trees are whispering their secrets to anyone who will listen.

I have the urge to photograph: agave plant, street sign, metal fence, a puddle, gate, trees ...

Everyone is looking their best.

I get back our house and I catch myself putting aside my curiosity and sense of delight and wonder; I've seen this front yard many times before.

... and then I catch myself catching myself and I say to myself:

Look and wonder!

As we're preparing to head into the studio to record a new album, some old and new thoughts on songs are surfacing.

What is it that makes a song shine? Is it the structure, theme, a catchy refrain...? Yes, all of these, I know, and much more.

I am always amazed to see Forest in the act of song writing. It's like watching a sculptor give shape to a piece of marble. I like watching it come to life and recognizing its features.

And then, in a matter of moments, the song becomes a familiar smiling face that beckons me to sing along.

Mushroom Suite for Two

I took a walk in the woods near the city of Cluj, Romania today and found a beautiful yellow mushroom. ... just one.
I'm not the best at telling which are edible and which are not but I was sure of this one because I saw the peasants sell it at the market. This one looks like a Chanterelle but I couldn't be sure. People around here simply call them, "yellows."
So I picked it and proudly carried it home. Its beautiful yellow color made me think of butter ... so here follows the story of cooking one mushroom for two.

First, you must admire it, tell it how beautiful it is and then wash it in cold water.

Set it on the cutting board.

Gently slice off the tip of the root.

Slice it long-wise with a sharp knife.

Admire it again.

Fire up the stove.

Melt some butter in a small frying pan.

Add a pinch of semi-fine Himalayan pink salt.

Gently stir the melting butter and salt until it's lightly browned.

Let the mushrooms fry on medium heat until the bottom side gets a deeper golden color. (Don't move them around. Just watch and savor the aromas.)

Once they are lightly browned, turn them over.

Just watch and savor again.

And just when you look away for a second they get to snuggling.

If you have a potted parsley plant, go and pick the most beautifully fresh leaves.

Set one half of the mushroom on a plate.

Drizzle the yummy salted butter in which you fried it.

Take one of the parsley leaves and lightly brush the buttered pan. (This coats the parsley with more of that delicious butter, salt and mushroom juice concoction.)

Enjoy!

Oh yes, grab a piece of bread and sop up the butter.

... I think I'll be going back for more tomorrow.

just learned how to bribe 3 traffic cops in Romania.
Here are the steps you must take:
1. Don't panic
2. Don't give your US drivers license. (Go to AAA and get an international driving permit for $10)
3. Ask, ... well is there something else we can do?
4. When he answers, "like what?" you reply "I don't know ... like what?"
5. Keep this intelligent repartee going until the policeman comes up with something.
6. When he asks you to show him your insurance once again and quickly follows that instruction with "You understand, don't you" accompanied by significant eyes dilations, you place some money inside the insurance paperwork and hope for the best.

PS. I should mention that they charged us with running a red light (which was green).

Spent the night at 4500 ft in the Heart of the Carpathian mountains, followed by a crazy drive through the snowed-in Transfagarasan pass.

These are the only two photos from that entire drive. It was so dangerous and intense that I spent the entire drive squeezing the door handle and repeating out loud: "It's ok, we're going to make it."

The photo above was taken at the beginning of the drive. About 10 minutes later, the road was completely covered with snow and we were sliding all around the parapet-free highway, on top of the highest peak in the Romania Carpathian mountains.

A few words on the hotel Capra.

The hotel we slept in before this momentous drive, was a slice of soviet-influenced accommodations featuring single beds with lumpy thin mattresses, old coarse blankets and a kitchen filled with smoking men dressed in white shirts and black suit pants and vests.

The food was not humanly comestible but we were very hungry so we ordered the only thing on the menu, beef soup, and relentlessly chewed the small cube-shaped beef bits with no success.

All of this at the price of 190 lei/night (about $75), which is quite high as far as hotels go.

The Real Vampire Lair

The visit to the castle below, called Poienari, which claims to be the real residence of the famous vampire in history, was preceded by our exploring the commercial version on Dracula's castle, also called the Bran Castle.

I'm only mentioning Bran castle here to draw a parallel between the two experiences.

Bran is beautiful structure with walls still intact and it swarms with visitors.

The inside walls are covered with bits of the region's history, vampire, or strigoi wives-tales and awkwardly-made period costume replicas.

A bit too crowded and theatrical for my taste.

I would have liked to be there on a private tour .... but then again, I always wish for that.

You know the saying, "careful what you wish for?"

I got my wish. An absoulte private tour of the real Dracula castle ... at twilight ... by a non-human tour guide.

from Vienna to Budapest the glory and the ditches

What a glorious day in Vienna! Got up early had pastries, fresh berries, tea and relaxation. Will definitely go back to Hotel Nestroy. Amazing!
We walked around town by the opera house and admired the ornate architecture with its magnificent stone sculptures and guilded wrought-iron balconies. There is such happiness when function meets aesthetics. And with that, I do declare and pronounce Vienna and Paris as the most beautiful cities in Europe. (that I have seen so far).

And then came the red gloves. Two years ago, In Munich, Forest and I saw these amazing red gloves and since then we always talked of them with longing and regret at not having bought them then. Until today! We found each other in Vienna. The red gloves and us, I mean. Oh what a joyful reunion! We gave a lady some colored paper and made off with the gloves. They're magnificent and they make me smile every time I look at them.

Oh, before I forget, a funny incident at the cafe shop in Vienna. We went in, sat down and ordered 2 pastries and a coffee. Then we left, walked around (got the red gloves) and returned to use the restroom. While Forest was in the WC the lady makes a move towards me using a couple of menus to persuade me to sit down. I say, "no thank you." My reply infuriates her and asks me in an offended tone if we just came to use her restroom. I reply "yes" to which she gives me a dirty look with some German grumbling on top and stomping away on the side. I try to remedy the situation by reminding her we were just in there a few minutes before. She sliced my attempt in half with the cruel truth: we only had a cup of coffee and two pastries. I looked for some German words of my own to grumble with but I had none. So we just left.

And with that we got on the short road to Budapest. It's only two and a half hours from Vienna; not bad especially after our six-hour driving days we've been doing. More on Budapest later ... it involves a maze-like hotel, a strange room and some peculiar wellness options at the hotel spa. ... oh yes and a memorable dinner. Stay tuned. :)

One the ways we've been making ourselves laugh silly is mispronouncing as many German sign posts as possible like: poopenroute, ausfahrt, indische kuche, badgasse and some more that will go unmentioned here.

So far so great. Arrived in Amsterdam, got picked up by my uncle and spent 3 days in Putten getting Marius (our car) ready for the big drive, buying two great bikes for amazing prices (buying bikes in Holland is the way to go) strapping them on the roof of our car and setting off to our first stop in Furth, Germany. But of course we could not start our sojourn without a trip to a Dutch cheese shop and a bakery on our new bikes. I love my bike, my Giant Jubilee.

Our hotel in Furth was divine, with a roman inspired sparkling white mozaic pool, steam bath and sauna, wood floors and spacious very clean rooms. And not only that but the hotel is on the edge on the forest so it was incredibly quiet and peaceful.

Viennese Restaurant

We are now in Vienna. It's so beautiful here. We arrived around 9pm last night. We checked in and went out to a delicious Viennese dinner. What a feast! After a 20 minute walk in the freezing temperatures we were welcomed in a cozy and strangely but lovely decorated small restaurant with noseless stone faces emerging from the walls, masks and party streamers flowing from the ceiling, lamp posts and a giant pretzel hanging by our heads. Never thought boiled beef could taste so good especially accompanied by Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and a series of Strauss' Viennese waltzes. Oh, and it's open until midnight.

The sky is blue, the sun is shining, the air is crisp and Mozart's Violin Concerto #3 in G is playing in the background. So very grateful for his life here and all the music he created. What a gift!

Just like Mozart is my favorite composer (present company excluded), the Danube is my favorite river. If you let it, it can wash away all your worries and sadness and it can bring you new life and joy. If you ever find yourself on a bridge over the Danube let the inflow feed you and the outflow cleanse you. The Lady Danube is a mighty ... I can't find a word to describe her. She flows beyond human words.

Today we set off to Budapest. I'm very much looking forward to it. I've been through Budapest several times but never stopped to really enjoy it. We booked a "wellness hotel" again with the help of booking.com which means we'll be spa-ing and swimming and overall well-being. :)
This is turning out to be such a lovely trip. The only time the dark clouds start gathering is when I have to drive. It feels like a battle with the stick shift and the crazy euro drivers around me whose speed qualifies them as blurred, honking, light-flashing unidentified flying objects of wrath. Somebody save me! ... and I have already been saved. I'm glad to say I will not be driving today.

Budapest, here we come! Maybe we'll have some gulash for dinner.

Interesting facts:
1. Did you know that the tax in Holland is 27%?
2. Dutch banks do not have cash on hand. We thought it was a joke but no, it's quite serious. Banks not having money is pretty strange, I thought.

3. There's no in-between car wash. The kind where you get a good vacuum and wipe on the inside and and wash on the outside. You can either drive through the huffer and puffer or you can have it done by human hands and have your car completely soaked for days (they say). We were told that they're now building a wash-your-own car station.
4. Our room in Furth was normally 320 something euros and we got it for 52. Yep, a very big thanks to booking.com
5. If you're going to leave your car sitting for 6 mos make sure to leave the windows a little bit opened. We didn't and the whole interior was covered in exuberant expressions of mold flowers.

Just arrived in Vienna. I drove today and I'm not getting any friendlier with that stick shift. I can do it alright but I don't have to like it, do I? :)

On the very up side, we got upgraded to a huge suite, FREE wireless (which is a miracle in Europe) and sauna. YES!!! Very grateful! out to dinner now ...

Mixed feelings today of excitement and a little bit of sadness. We're embarking on quite the adventure. 6 months of Europe; of remodeling our new Transylvanian house, gardening, exploring, singing, playing and traveling and also 6 months without redwood trees, without the Californian ocean coast, without amazing sushi, without the ease wireless internet ...

We did a few goodbye gestures like taking a really nice hike yesterday through redwoods and waterfalls, having a phenomenal sushi dinner in San Francisco tonight, taking a walk in Chinatown and using the free wireless of our hotel. :) We'll be installing wireless at our house. (you can read more of my rants about the state of the internet connectivity and ease, or lack-there-of in Europe)

These past 2 weeks have been so crazy and fun and busy and exasperating. We packed a 40ft container with all of our things including a few last minute items like a hot tub, a dryer, stove and a fridge. Everything is bubble-wrapped, anchored, tied and secured. I consider myself a master of tying knots and according to my parents I started from a very early age by tying every single loose end in the house (shoe laces, robe ties, belts, rug tassels, you name it) with multiple knots until there was nothing left to tie. What can I say, some things we're just born to do. Forest was really nice and let me make all the knots while he did all the heavy lifting.

So here we are at the Andrews Hotel in beautiful San Francisco telling all of our US friends goodbye and all of our European ones, we'll see you very soon.
